I thought I would dig into what it would take to make the XR9-S California compliant. Please check out the Proposed Manual Safety in this album: http://www.bobergarms.com/photo/photo/slideshow?albumId=2312567:Alb... Suggestions and comments can be posted under the "Accessories" category in our forum.
What I have done here is taken advantage of the existing Takedown/Bolt Hold Open Lever to use as a manual safety. When the slide is in the forward position, a new cutout in the slide will allow this lever to rotate downward 90 degrees to the "safe position". Not only can't the slide move backward, but there is an existing feature that does not allow the trigger to fully stroke the hammer nor operate the passive firing pin safety when the Takedown lever is in any position other than its "home" (or firing) position. In other words, the gun cannot possibly be fired even when thumbing the hammer using the takedown lever as a manual safety. I don't believe that the takedown lever will move during firing, but that has to be tested. If it becomes an issue, then the notch could be moved back a little bit, but then you would have to shift the slide a little to activate the manual safety. What do you guys think?
I also have a concept using existing parts (though slightly modified) that may provide for a magazine disconnect. These modified parts will be unique to California unless others request this.
As far as Loaded Chamber Indicator: on the XR9 you can clearly see the case flange and part of the cartridge. I don't know if this is sufficient to meet CA requirements. I had a S&W Sigma that used a "peering hole" to view if the chamber was loaded - I don't know if that would qualify for the CA safe gun roster (after the law was passed).
