Arne, curious to hear what you think about the XDM line relative to other striker-fired and 1911 designs?  What do you think about the grip safety?

I like the larger Springfield XD-series pistols, and have shot the "original XD" before. I thought it felt a lot like my Glock but with a more "American-style" grip. I remember when they came out - they offered good value to the consumer and an alternative to Glock. I never cared for the compact style since it looks to me like they just chopped off the barrel and grip of their bigger gun - of course, I am biased...

As far as the back-strap safety - I think that they want to appeal to 1911 owners since this type of safety, in my opinion, is not really necessary if you already have a passive firing pin safety that will prevent discharge when dropped. That is probably why not a lot of guns have this type of safety on them any more.
Regarding grip safety- does it significantly reduce the chance of AD when unholstering the gun?

You might be right on that one if the trigger is exposed and you have your finger on it. All my holsters have the trigger guard area covered. Keep in mind that when you unholster the gun, you may have that backstrap safety depressed anyway.
