When people first see the XR9-S one of the most common things they say is "it has too many parts therefore it will be unreliable". I am not sure this is true.  It was generally held that Japanese cars in the 1990's were more reliable then American cars. Did they necessarily have few parts or just a better design.

For fun I took a parts count of the 1911 and of the XR9-S and tried to compare them. I counted the number of screws, pins and springs in each. I just went by the part name, so the "firing pin" is a pin just like the "hammer rotating pin"  is. I downloaded several 1911 parts lists, they appear to be many variants.

Here is my count

1911

springs: 6

pins: 8

screws: 4

total : 60

XR9-S

springs: 13

pins: 11

screws: 6

total: 66

The XR9-S has 53 unique parts; some parts, like pins and springs are used more than once.

GONRA sez - am pretty sure the (between the wars) Mexican Mendoza 7mm Mauser caliber Light Machine Gun

(locked breech, gas operated) had about 35 parts for the All Tyme Champ on "low parts count".

Someting to strive for.....  HA HA

Straight from the horses mouth.
