Boberg Arms

Another fine leather creation from Mr. Locke.  Because I've been carrying a .380 in a front pocket holster for some time, I thought I'd want to do the same with the Boberg.  So I ordered one of these along with the IWB holster. I think this design is pretty distinctive and unique.  The upper backing piece really breaks up the outline of the grip, yet moves aside easily to grasp it...well done!  BTW, nice top detailing in the second pic.   Right now the edges are stiff and square, so the outline stands out a bit in the front pocket of my jeans.  But I know the four corners will round in a bit after wearing it awhile, so it will be less noticeable and look more like a wallet.  With seven in the mag, though, it's the widest wallet I've ever seen!  Still, it works acceptably well for front pocket carry.  Too tight to draw now, but that will improve as it wears in.

You can see in the last pic why it can't really be carried in the back pocket, though it fits great there.  The way girls are always checking out my butt, it's just too risky...8-) Perfect to wear in pants with a button down pocket flap...just don't button, of course.  Two thumbs up for Meco holsters!

Good pictures.

I agree, concealing all but the tiniest guns in the back pocket - that is hiding the gun altogether - is a losing proposition.

That's exactly why I like the idea of *not* trying to conceal its presence at all, but to disguise it. It could look just like a wallet when someone is right above the pocket opening looking down, and create no attention. It's more related to the fanny pack concept that was somewhat popular a few years ago, than the usual concept behind concealment holsters. I thought the brass zipper was unnecessary and bright. Perhaps that offset the suspicious largeness of the wallet?

I'd think an innocuous visible wallet-look flap on top that won't prompt a second look wouldn't be too hard to create.

I agree, Jethro. Truth is, for many pants, you can't carry in your back pocket and maintain complete concealment. Which, as you say, is a shame, because it otherwise fits so well.  Oh, and I believe that zipper holster is only available for the Ruger LCP.....

Yes, that is true.  Time will tell just how much of a difference it will make.  Hey, it is a lot better than carrying a Glock 26 in your front pocket...tried that once!  I know it will work for some folks with certain clothing.  But, for me so far, I'd judge this gun best for IWB carry, it's fantastic for that.  I think the Micro will be better for front pocket carry when it's released someday.  I'll also look to buy a couple pairs of pants with deep back pockets and pocket flaps...easy enough.

In time the holster will mold to the curve of your leg

Of course, wear a long enough sweatshirt or jacket and the XR9-S resides just fine in your back pocket...like it was made to go there.  You do need to keep some awareness on where the tail of your shirt is riding, especially if your pants seem to slowly slide down a little over time, like mine do (I'm pretty active all day). Also, the XR9-S is not the easiest draw from the back pocket of jeans, but with a little practice I think it's ok.

I carry an LCP in a wallet holster in a hip pocket.  With some jeans the pocket is deep enough that it doesn't peek out, but with others it does show as in some of the photos above.  My solution to that is a folded pocket handkerchief.  I place the holstered pistol in the back pocket, then the folded handkerchief so that it protrudes about 1" out of the pocket.  It tends to flop over the top of the pistol, concealing it just fine.  The hankie doesn't impede my draw, either.

I've yet to get a wallet holster for the XR-9S, but I'm thinking the hankie trick should work for it, too.

OP:  Is that Meco holster sized specifically for the XR9-S, or did you order one for another pistol figuring it would work?  I ask because I went to the Meco website and did not see the Boberg listed as a pistol they build holsters for.

Robert from Meco does a REALLY nice job customizing the holster not only to the Boberg but also to your own preferences. (cant, above waistband, sweat shield, etc) An extra touch that I like is the Boberg seal that he puts on the holster. See OP's pics.

Like Brokedoc says, custom all the way.  You have to make a selection under the Firearm drop down menu on the Online Order Form. "Boberg XR9S" is the first choice (in more ways than one).

Harry,

Is that split design  really an improvement when drawing the pistol?

I'm just about ready to order a Meco, I'm just having a hard time deciding on which one.

I realize you haven't had yours all that long, but how is it wearing in?

Loren

Loren, yes, I'd say so.  The  leather covering piece pushes aside a little easier than a couple of others I've used, one from Pocketholster.com and the Uncle George's, pictured on page 1 (both good holsters). Both of those have a one piece, rectangular backing.  I was a little unsure before I ordered the Meco because I thought it looked a little unconventional/weird.  Good design for drawing, though, and it works well to shield the frame and grip from printing.  Personally, I'm not finding a whole lot of use for pocket carry with this gun right now, especially since the IWB is working so well for me.  I think it will probably work fine for some folks with the right pair of cargo or tactical pants, though.  BTW, the handkerchief is a great idea.
